Alex G @ The Anthem

I’ve been a fan of Alex G since 2020, but I haven’t kept up with his recent work. This concert allowed me to experience Alex G’s newer music in an incredible atmosphere, inspiring me to listen to more of his discography.

This was my first time visiting The Anthem, and I had a great experience! I showed up thirty minutes before the show started and was let through swiftly. Walking in, the first thing I saw was the merchandise stall–there were multiple cashiers working, so buying the merch was a fast and easy process. There were many options such as shirts, hoodies, totes and hats. I had bought a graphic tee and love the design.

Other than the merchandise stall, the venue had multiple food and drink stalls. I didn’t get anything, but they had a variety of options. The hall itself is beautiful, consisting of three floors; the top two have seats and the bottom is a spacious floor (where I stood). I could see the stage clearly, which itself was a great size and decorated with many colorful spotlight.

Nilüfer Yanya was the opening act for the night, and I couldn’t have been more impressed with her performance. I had not heard of her band before, but I had become an instant fan as soon as I heard her first jazz-y indie rock-y guitar riff. That was also when I’d noticed how well the sound traveled in the hall, and the amazing sound quality enhanced Alex G’s performance, too.

Alex G is an incredible performer and vocalist, and his bandmates were spectacular. He played a ton of songs and was on stage for almost two hours, with his encore lasting about half an hour. What really struck me was the lighting–I am not knowledgeable in lighting effect terms, but the color and smoke that changed with the music really worked wonders for the atmosphere.

In terms of the songs that had been performed by Alex G, some highlights for me were “Gretel”, “Runner”, “Afterlife”, and “Kute”. Alex G’s emotional performance deeply moved me. I would’ve like to see him play a bit more of his older music, though.

Overall, I had an overwhelmingly positive experience at The Anthem. The venue itself contributed significantly to Alex G’s great performance, and I hope to return for another show soon.
